1560s (Arab Pirate Raids & Depopulation): Frequent devastation by Ottoman corsairs, including Barbarossa, temporarily forced inhabitants to abandon coastal villages for safer inland refuges like Valdichiesa.

1867 (Autonomy & Emigration Era): Salina separated administratively from Lipari. Soon after, the late 19th-century phylloxera epidemic devastated local vineyards, triggering mass emigration to Australia and the Americas.
